In springtime 2019, I was thinking about where to go on vacation this year. I was never really interested in the east of Europe, but I had the idea of going to Masuria. I had often heard that the landscape there is said to be very beautiful and that Sigfried Lenz described it nicely in the book “So zärtlich war Suleiken”. I also have a Polish-sounding last name, which means that several generations ago someone in the family must have come from Poland. So I checked the internet for trips to Poland. Here I immediately found a provider who offers guided car tours to the Baltic States and Poland. However, these tours are not really my thing with fixed stages and hotels. Because of my road trip experiences from the USA, I put together a trip myself. So we took the ferry from Kiel in 22 hours to Klaipeda in Lithuania and from there slowly drove back to Germany in our own car.
